Automation with style: KUKA wins a triple distinction at the German Design Awards 2020

Functionality, a clear design and aesthetic corporate branding convinced the German Design Awards 2020 jury. Three KUKA products received an award for outstanding industrial design at the ceremony in Frankfurt am Main.

Automation with style: KUKA wins a triple distinction at the German Design Awards 2020

Winner of the German Design Awards 2020: KUKA
When the German Design Awards 2020 were presented last week at the “Ambiente” trade fair in Frankfurt, KUKA was at the very head of the field. No less than three awards for industrial design went to the automation specialist from Augsburg. In the “Excellent Product Design” category, the jury awarded prizes to the two autonomous platforms for flexible material transport, KMP 600 and KMP 1500, and the KUKA carla_connect charging assistant that is intended for charging electric vehicles at home.

Industrial design: three top awards for KUKA
The high-caliber international experts of the German Design Awards 2020 thus rewarded the “wonderfully clear and futuristic-looking design that perfectly expresses the standards of progressive technologies” (KMP 1500), “the systematic design combining functionality, progressive aesthetics and corporate branding at a high creative level” (KMP 600) and the “innovative technology, quality and functionality in a striking, highly aesthetic design language” (carla_connect).

Numerous awards for industrial design
The design of the charging assistant and the two vehicles is the work of Mario Selic, who has been shaping the appearance of KUKA robots for 25 years and has won numerous prizes for his achievements. He says: “Robots are real powerhouses because they often have to move enormous weight while simultaneously having incredible endurance and the ability to accelerate. They thus embody the ideal athlete for me.”

The safe system of carla_connect and its low depth are ideal for integration even in confined parking situations, thus especially in home garages. Selic says: “The color scheme is coordinated with KUKA's corporate identity and fits seamlessly into the company’s product family.”

Winner of the German Design Awards 2020: full flexibility for industrial production
The mobile platform KMP 600 is an autonomously controlled vehicle designed for flexible material transport, helping to optimize logistics management. With its precise lifting mechanism, it transports mobile racks to picking workstations, for example. The system is suitable for a range of different industries, is extremely flexible and can be quickly adapted to changing customer requirements.

Its big brother, the KMP 1500 automated guided vehicle with lifting mechanism, supplies manufacturing systems with material and makes Industrie 4.0 production more flexible. Thanks to omnidirectional drive technology, the vehicle can move in any direction from a standing start. With its lifting mechanism, it autonomously moves components between machining stations or delivers finished products to the warehouse.
