Industrial Edge AI for Process Automation Architectures

Schneider Electric, NVIDIA, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise have established an engineering collaboration to deploy edge-based artificial intelligence across process and heavy industries. The architecture integrates physical AI directly into continuous operational environments, addressing the constraints of latency, strict data governance, and deterministic control.

Integration Challenges in Continuous Industrial Operations
Process industries operate under continuous thermodynamic and mechanical cycles where unplanned downtime or computational latency leads directly to production loss and safety risks. Transmitting large volumes of telemetry data from operational technology networks to remote cloud infrastructure introduces latency, expands network attack surfaces, and incurs high recurring bandwidth costs. Furthermore, data sovereignty regulations and proprietary process safeguards frequently prohibit the export of raw industrial telemetry beyond the local physical perimeter.

Edge-Based Computing Architecture and Responsibilities
The deployed solution combines hardware, software, and industrial domain architectures across three layers:

Hewlett Packard Enterprise supplies the on-premises edge infrastructure through HPE Private Cloud AI, co-engineered with NVIDIA. This platform processes computation locally to minimize perimeter network exposure and maintain data sovereignty.

NVIDIA provides accelerated computing architectures and Nemotron open models engineered for local reasoning over multi-variable time-series data and control logic.

Schneider Electric contributes operational technology domain models and governance frameworks. Through its EcoStruxure Industrial Insights platform, the system coordinates agent lifecycles, controls interface permissions, and translates telemetry into deterministic control recommendations.

Specialized Functional Agents
The architecture implements three distinct agent roles at the operational edge:

Operational technology monitoring agents evaluate control system configurations, network topology, alarms, and maintenance logs. The software diagnoses early equipment degradation and verifies corrective interventions.

Cybersecurity agents correlate control bus communications, asset states, and network events to detect anomalies. The system isolates suspicious traffic without disrupting continuous manufacturing loops.

Energy optimization agents correlate dynamic utility rates, equipment load profiles, and ambient operating parameters to modulate energy consumption while maintaining process setpoints.

Implementation and Field Application
The underlying monitoring foundation operates in production at CMPC Chile, an industrial pulp, paper, and packaging manufacturer. CMPC utilizes Schneider Electric's Operational Technology Monitoring System to oversee distributed control systems, network switches, servers, and operator workstations.

By evaluating asset health across continuous production lines, the existing deployment provides the verified contextual data model necessary for autonomous agent inference. The joint edge platform integrates directly into this topology, enabling automated diagnostic reasoning without altering underlying safety instrumented systems.

Sri Kodali, Global Head of Developer Relations for Energy and Utilities at NVIDIA, stated: "By combining NVIDIA Nemotron open AI models and HPE Private Cloud AI, a turnkey AI factory solution, with Schneider Electric's industrial expertise and OTMS platform, Industrial AI Agents can monitor, reason and optimize operations in real time, accelerating the path to Physical AI for process industries."
