Alva Industries expands frameless motor range with higher torque

Robotics, electro-optical systems, and precision motion control applications increasingly rely on direct-drive motors that combine compact design with high torque and smooth operation. In this context, Alva Industries has introduced a new motor size within its SlimTorq frameless portfolio, extending its range to address higher torque requirements in space-constrained systems.

The newly introduced STM-190-35 motor expands the existing SlimTorq STM series, bringing the total portfolio to nine available sizes with configurable geometries and winding options.

Higher torque in a compact frameless architecture
The STM-190-35 is designed for applications requiring increased torque without compromising system integration. Its geometry, characterised by a balanced inner-to-outer diameter ratio and reduced axial length, enables integration into compact assemblies while maintaining torque density and control performance.

Frameless motors are typically integrated directly into the mechanical structure of the system, eliminating the need for housings and enabling more flexible mechanical design. This makes them particularly suitable for applications such as gimbals, electro-optical stabilisation platforms, and robotic joints, where precision and compactness are essential.

Slotless design for smooth motion control
Like other motors in the SlimTorq range, the STM-190-35 features a slotless, ironless winding design enabled by the company’s FiberPrinting technology. This architecture eliminates cogging torque, resulting in smoother motion and improved control accuracy, which is critical in applications requiring precise positioning and low vibration.

The high copper fill factor achieved through this manufacturing approach also contributes to improved electromagnetic efficiency and thermal performance.

Design support through simulation tools
To support system-level integration, the motor is compatible with Alva’s TorqStudio platform, which allows engineers to simulate performance, evaluate different winding configurations, and optimise motor selection during early design stages.

Such tools are increasingly used in engineering workflows to reduce prototyping iterations and ensure that motor characteristics align with application-specific requirements before physical implementation.

Configurability for application-specific requirements
The STM-190-35 can be configured with multiple inner diameters, winding patterns, and additional features such as temperature sensors and Hall sensors. This flexibility allows engineers to adapt the motor to specific performance, control, and integration constraints.

With this addition, Alva Industries expands its offering for direct-drive systems that require a balance between torque, precision, and compact form factor, particularly in advanced motion control applications.
