SICK Launches OD200 Sensor for Complex Surface Measurement

SICK has launched the new OD200, a compact laser distance sensor for measuring short ranges that sets new standards in this sensor class with its outstanding stability on highly reflective, dark and irregular surfaces. It delivers high performance and productivity even in complex and demanding applications, such as shiny metal and plastic parts and in poor lighting conditions, to reduce errors and minimise costly rework. With a newly-developed measuring core, cutting-edge dynamic receiver system and optimised optical system, the robust OD200 µm optical displacement sensor raises the bar when it comes to fast, stable, reliable, and repeatable detection and measurement.

Complementing sensor intelligence specialist SICK’s portfolio of displacement sensors and the range of applications of the highly successful OD Mini, the OD200 is plug and play for easy installation and commissioning. It offers all the standard connectivity options and enables high process speed with full and precise measurement performance. In addition to the measured values, the IO-Link-enabled sensor also provides data for inline performance optimisation and ongoing condition monitoring.

The OD200 meets the demands of modern production and quality control, making it the ideal solution for a wide range of applications in an array of different industries, including the automotive industry, aerospace, consumer goods industry, electronics, robotics, and mechanical and plant engineering. It can be used in applications as varied as real-time in-line quality control for reflective materials, precise counting of small parts and goods, and accurate detection of height deviations in assembled parts.

OD200: The ideal solution for measurements on all materials and environmental conditions
The OD200 delivers more stable and accurate measurement results on complex surfaces. In industrial production, assembly and quality processes, reflective, irregular or complexly structured material surfaces (such as carbon fibre composites, die castings or finely textured metals) pose a challenge for precise measurements. This can lead to inaccurate or missing measured values, particularly in difficult lighting conditions or when components are small. The OD200 succeeds in achieving significantly more accurate measurements on challenging surfaces.

A newly-developed triangulation measurement core with powerful evaluation algorithms plays a key role in delivering a high level of accuracy. The OD200 is designed for high speed applications, with process speeds up to 3 kHz, and is available in various sensor variants for measuring ranges of 25 mm to 160 mm, with repeatability down to 2 µm. In addition, the high-resolution receiver unit ensures even surfaces with low remission are reliably detected. The optical system is optimised for the geometry and quality of the light spot, as well as ambient light immunity. When combined, these features ensure reliable measuring for high-gloss, reflective or virtually remission-free objects, structured and uneven surfaces, or in critical ambient brightness. Interference caused by incorrect measurements and missing signals is significantly reduced to cut downtime, adjustment and maintenance effort, delivering higher productivity.

Integration, commissioning, connectivity: all plug and play
Integration and commissioning of the compact OD200 is simple, even in confined spaces. The sensor is compatible with all industry standards and has a range of accessories available. Intelligent default settings and algorithms, as well as the intuitive, menu-driven user interface on the device's display, simplify setup and operation. The flexible OD200 offers a wide range of connectivity options for automation systems and industry 4.0 environments, including all required and industry-standard interfaces and I/Os, IO-Link, an analogue current/voltage output, and one switching input and output. IO-Link ensures full access to the sensor, even in difficult or inaccessible installation locations.

Inline optimisation and condition monitoring
The OD200 can be programmed using SICK’s free and easy-to-use SOPAS open parameterization and application software. In addition to the actual measurement data, the sensor also provides useful operating data, for example on the exposure time or the width of the signal peak, which is evaluated to calculate the distance. This information from ongoing operation can be used both for inline optimization of sensor performance and for condition monitoring of the sensor or processes.

Nick Hartley, SICK Market Product Manager for Instrumentation & Distance Measurement, says, “The compact OD200 displacement sensor enables reliable measurements, even on materials that other sensors fail to measure. It is robust, fast and easy to install, with its compact housing providing better integration. Delivering precise, stable measurement from 25 mm to 160 mm down to the micron level across three variants, the OD200 is suited to numerous applications across a wide range of industry sectors, providing enhanced productivity and peace of mind even in challenging ambient light conditions and with dark, shiny or uneven materials.”
