From service robotics to medical technology to vehicle equipment: consumers are getting used to automated motion systems. To realise them in confined installation spaces, igus has developed the new, low-maintenance and electric telescopic extension drylin NTM-45.

igus has designed the new telescopic extension drylin NTM-45 so that it can also be used in situations where space is limited. The system is only 42mm high, 45mm wide and between 150 and 500mm, depending on the type. The maximum extension length amounts to 500mm. “Due to its compact drive with a space-saving motor connection, this solution is suitable for tight installation spaces where classic linear guides with a separate motor and control system would be too large,” says Michael Hornung, Product Manager drylin Linear and Drive Technology at igus.

Thanks to its compact design and 100% full extension, the drylin NTM-45 can be used in a wide range of industries. In medical technology, it can be found in devices such as mobile trolleys for storing and dispensing medicines, especially in sterile environments such as laboratories or hospitals. “The lubrication-free mechanism is specifically laid out for hygienic applications,” says Hornung. The electric telescope is also ideal for use in cars and mobile homes. Whether sliding arm rests, mirrors or monitor systems, the NTM-45 makes the vehicle more flexibility and comfortable. Thanks to aluminium and plastic components, the system is very lightweight. Another field of application is service robotics. drylin NTM-45 in combination with a programmable control system allows for autonomous deliveries in the catering sector, such as the automatic opening and closing of drawers.

Lubrication-free telescopic extension is hygienic and low-maintenance
In addition to the compact design and its wide range of possible applications, another advantage is that the new NTM-45 system does not require classic rolling bearings and lubricants. Anodised aluminium profiles and an aluminium centre-rail coated with iglidur IC-05 polymer ensure low-friction and wear-resistant dry operation while a dryspin high helix lead screw increases the mechanism’s smooth running and durability. Dust and dirt cannot accumulate, resulting in maintenance-free, fail-safe and hygienic operation.

“NTM-45 is not just a product, but a complete solution”
Designers have the choice between various electric motors from igus. The drylin E series includes stepper motors, DC motors and EC/BLDC motors. With the D1 motor control system, users can easily program motion sequences via WLAN or LAN and adjust parameters such as speed and acceleration flexibly. “The NTM-45 telescopic extension is not just a product, but a complete solution that simplifies work processes and increases the reliability of the end product,” summarises Hornung.
