Hannover Messe 2025: Pilz at Hydrogen + Fuel Cells EUROPE in Hall 13, Stand D34 - How hydrogen becomes a safe bet

Fast, reliable detection of gas leaks, maintaining an overview of pressure, fill level, voltage and current, monitoring combustion processes safely – well-tried automation safety principles can protect hydrogen applications in a way that's particularly economical and intelligent. At Hydrogen + Fuel Cells EUROPE, Pilz will be presenting its solutions for functional safety in the hydrogen industry. The automation company will also be showing how hydrogen applications are protected from manipulation and misuse.

Functional safety for the hydrogen industry
Safety solutions from Pilz help to consider safety always as an overarching monitoring function for components and their functional relationship within the process chain. As such they offer added value for the whole hydrogen added value chain. From electrolysis through to steam reforming – Pilz experts on our stand will explain the different safety-related approaches that are important, depending on the way in which hydrogen is generated. The Pilz small controller PNOZmulti 2 and the automation system PSS 4000 from Pilz safeguard the generation of hydrogen via electrolysis, for example. Also, the automation system PSS 4000 is already proven when it comes to maintaining an overview of all the safety functions on hydrogen refuelling stations – on the cooling system and high-pressure storage tanks, and when dispensing hydrogen.

Holistic approach to Safety and Security
A holistic approach includes not just Functional Safety but also Industrial Security, in other words protection against manipulation and misuse. Industrial Security plays a special role, not least due to the requirements of NIS2 (EU Directive on Network and Information Security) - mandatory since 2024 - and the new Machinery Regulation, which will be mandatory from 2027. From user authentication, data and network security, functionally safe operating mode selection through to access management or electronic maintenance safeguarding: Pilz experts will be available on the stand to advise on the automation expert's tailor-made security solutions.

Safe automation is also a subject of the exhibition's accompanying lecture programme: at the Public Forum, Albert Cot, Market Development Engineer at Pilz, will report on the challenge of implementing Functional Safety and Industrial Security in hydrogen applications. In the Technical Forum, Thomas Braasch, Sales Engineer at Pilz, will go into more detail about the importance of Functional Safety and Industrial Security in the production of hydrogen via electrolysis.
