Display solutions and embedded systems provider, Review Display Systems Inc. (RDS) has today announced the availability of a new System-on-Module (SOM) from Kontron, a leading global provider of embedded computing technology. The SOM-SL STM32MP157 is based on the STMicroelectronics STM32MP157A processor which features fully integrated Dual Cortex-A7 and Cortex-M4 processor cores.

The integrated Cortex-M4 core of the STM32MP157A processor offers proven microcontroller technology and sufficient computing power and graphics capability to support demanding control tasks within factory automation, process control and internet communication applications. Based on a pre-installed embedded Linux operating system, which includes all drivers for communications and display interfaces, the Cortex-A7 Dual Core can handle complex graphics tasks with ease.

With dimensions of only 1-inch (l) x 1-inch (w) (25.4mm x 25.4 mm), the design of the STM32MP157A processor-based System-on-Module provides a powerful, highly compact, and cost-effective solution for a wide range of baseboard designs. The SOM has been designed as a directly solderable module, with no additional connectors required on the SOM module or baseboard.

Peter Marchant, embedded division manager, RDS said, “The three fully integrated processor cores on the Kontron SOM provide a truly versatile embedded processing solution for a wide range of industrial applications. With the addition of external peripherals, functional, effective control and automation systems can easily be created.”

The Kontron SOM-SL STM32MP157 features, as standard, 256MB DDR3 RAM (with an option of 512MB), 2MB NOR flash and 256MB NAND flash (with an option of 512 MB). It also has two 10/100 Mbit/s Ethernet ports, two USB 2.0 ports, up to eight UART ports and up to two CAN ports. Additional support includes general purpose digital and analog I/O, a PWM and three Secure Digital Input Output (SDIO) interfaces. External displays are supported with a Display Serial Interface (DSI) port and a 24-bit RGB interface.

To aid and assist baseboard design and development, Kontron has also introduced a 4.3-inch form-factor evaluation board which is available as a reference design. A standard operating temperature range of 0°C to +70°C is supported, with optional versions available offering an extended industrial temperature range of -40°C to +85°C.

The Kontron SOM-SL STM32MP157 is ideally suited for use in industrial, automation, medical, point-of-sale and point-of-information applications, and is now available immediately from Review Display Systems Inc.
