Actemium carries out the maintenance of polishing the mirrors of the (future) world’s largest telescope

The Safran Electronics & Defense Poitiers site is specialized in optronic programs, avionics and guidance electronics. It was appointed by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) to polish and integrate the mirrors of the European Extremely Large Telescope (ELT-M1).

This future telescope, installed in Chile, will be the largest and most powerful in the world, with a diameter of nearly 39 meters, and should be operational in 2025.

As polishing is a crucial and meticulous step, on which the precision of the telescope fully depends, the project requires real technological prowess in process, such as ion machining or robotics. In addition, production rates involve a lot of pressure and constraints on the integration, commissioning and availability of equipment.

It is in this context that Actemium Maintenance Ouest Center carries out the maintenance of all the equipment of this site at the cutting edge of technology. In order to meet the client’s expectations, a turnkey offer has been proposed: digitization of certain processes such as intervention reports, construction of a maintenance plan, implementation of ranges, definition of spare parts stock, and operational maintenance. The Actemium team is present every day at the site to ensure preventive and corrective maintenance of the equipment.
