Leoni develops the worldwide first SPE cables for drag chain and torsion applications
Leoni, global solution provider for power and data management in the automotive and other industries, has developed two new cables for the industrial data transmission standard Single Pair Ethernet (SPE), which can be used in drag chain and torsion applications. This makes Leoni the first cable manufacturer in the world to bring these cables to market.
- Extreme mechanical load capacity for highly flexible applications
- Halogen free, abrasion resistant and flame retardant outer sheath
Together with six other well-known technology companies, Leoni is a founding member of the SPE Industrial Partner Network e.V. (https://www.single-pair-ethernet.com). SPE is the infrastructure basis that makes the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) or Industry 4.0 possible. SPE solutions are used in a space and cost-saving manner and enable direct communication from the cloud to the field level. SPE transmits data at a speed of up to 1 Gbit/s with only one pair of wires.
The Leoni portfolio already includes two basic types with 22 AWG* and 26 AWG* conductors as well as a hybrid cable, which are used in industrial applications. Now the SPE product family is being expanded: With the newly developed products SPE-Trailing for drag chain applications and SPE-Torsion for torsion applications, the world's first SPE cables are now available on the market that have been specially developed for high mechanical loads. SPE-Trailing achieves 3 million cycles with a bending radius of 75 mm. The SPE torsion, on the other hand, achieves 3 million cycles of ±180° on one meter length.
Because of this, the cables are ideally suited for use in highly flexible applications.
Ideal for the Highflex performance is the halogen-free outer sheath made of highly elastic polyurethane (PUR), which is not only characterized by its abrasion resistance, but also protects against grease, oil and lubricants. Thanks to the admixture of flame-retardant additives, the sheath also meets the fire protection requirements of IEC 60332-1-2, and the cable also features UL Style 21198.
The cables were tested in the in-house drag chain test center in Friesoythe.
