Embedded AI vision system for industrial inspection

Cognex announced the launch of the In-Sight® 3900 Vision System, a fully integrated machine vision platform designed for industrial inspection tasks requiring high speed, high resolution, and edge-based AI processing. The system is built on a new generation of Cognex embedded AI vision technology and powered by Qualcomm Dragonwing™ platforms.

According to Cognex, the In-Sight 3900 combines Edge AI, Advanced AI, and rule-based vision tools with embedded compute capabilities to support deterministic, real-time inspections at full production line speed. The company stated that the platform is intended for applications in packaging, automotive, electronics, and consumer goods manufacturing.

Embedded AI Vision for High-Speed Production
Cognex stated that the In-Sight 3900 is designed to eliminate tradeoffs between inspection complexity and line speed. The system integrates AI acceleration and optimized processing pipelines to support synchronized inspection on high-speed production lines.

Imaging and Connectivity Capabilities
The In-Sight 3900 supports image resolutions of up to 25 megapixels, enabling wider fields of view, finer measurement capabilities, and defect detection within a single image acquisition, according to Cognex.

The company also stated that the platform delivers inspection processing speeds up to four times faster than previous-generation Cognex vision systems. Additional features include dual Ethernet connectivity for communication with PLCs, robots, and enterprise systems.

Edge-Based AI Architecture
Cognex stated that the system incorporates a dedicated high-performance AI processor designed for deterministic decision-making directly at the edge.

The platform supports:
  • Edge AI tools intended for rapid deployment and inspection stability
  • Advanced AI tools for applications involving higher variability
  • PC-free operation to simplify deployment, validation, and lifecycle management
Integration with Cognex OneVision
Cognex stated that the In-Sight 3900 can be integrated with Cognex OneVision™, its cloud-to-edge AI vision ecosystem. According to the company, the platform enables centralized AI model development and deployment across multiple devices while allowing inspections to run locally at production speed.

Additional Context
Embedded AI vision systems are increasingly being adopted in manufacturing environments where inspection tasks require low latency, high throughput, and reduced dependence on external computing hardware. Edge-based processing allows image analysis and decision-making to occur directly on production equipment, reducing communication delays and enabling real-time inspection.

Machine vision systems combining AI-based inspection tools with traditional rule-based vision methods are commonly used in industries such as packaging, automotive manufacturing, electronics assembly, and consumer goods production. Higher-resolution imaging sensors can support wider inspection areas and finer defect detection while reducing the number of cameras required in some applications.

Cloud-to-edge vision platforms are also being used to centralize AI model training and deployment across multiple manufacturing sites while maintaining local execution of inspection tasks on factory equipment.
