Bosch Rexroth has expanded its portfolio for hazardous environments with the MS2E synchronous servo motor, designed for zones 2 and 22. The system simplifies installation and engineering through single cable technology and integration into the ctrlX AUTOMATION platform.

Context: Complexity in explosion-proof automation
Automation in potentially explosive atmospheres requires compliance with strict safety standards while maintaining system performance and reliability. Conventional servo motor installations in such environments often involve complex wiring, increased space requirements, and additional engineering effort.

Bosch Rexroth developed the MS2E motor series to address these challenges, focusing on reducing system complexity while ensuring compliance with international standards for global deployment.

Single cable technology reduces installation effort
A key feature of the MS2E servo motor is its hybrid single cable connection, which combines power supply, encoder feedback, and temperature signals into one cable.

This design reduces the number of interfaces required, lowering installation time, minimising wiring errors, and reducing cabinet and routing space. The simplified architecture also supports faster commissioning and streamlined maintenance.

Performance and safety for hazardous environments
The MS2E is designed for device group II, category 3, and supports ignition protection types “Ex ec” (increased safety) and “Ex tc” (protection by enclosure). It is suitable for gas zone 2 and dust zone 22 applications.

The motor series is available in six sizes and delivers torque of up to 360 Nm, with overload capacity up to four times the rated torque. This enables use in dynamic applications requiring high power density.

Integrated digital encoders, available in single-turn and multi-turn versions, support functional safety up to SIL2 / PL d. An embedded motor data memory enables plug-and-play commissioning within compatible drive systems.

Global certifications support international deployment
The MS2E Type A variant is certified according to ATEX, UKCA, IECEx, and CCC Ex standards, allowing machine builders to deploy equipment across multiple regulatory regions without redesign.

Complementary solution for higher-risk zones
For more demanding environments, including zones 1 and 21, Bosch Rexroth continues to offer the MKE motor series. These motors use pressure-resistant encapsulation to withstand harsher operating conditions and are available with certifications including ATEX, KCS, optional UL/CSA, and CCC Ex.

System integration with ctrlX AUTOMATION
Both MS2E and MKE motors are fully integrated into the ctrlX AUTOMATION platform, enabling consistent engineering workflows from design to commissioning.

This system-level integration reduces configuration complexity, supports standardised architectures, and improves scalability for automation systems operating in hazardous areas.

Conclusion: Reducing engineering complexity in Ex applications
With the introduction of the MS2E servo motor, Bosch Rexroth addresses key challenges in explosion-proof automation by combining simplified wiring, high performance, and global certification. The approach supports more efficient system design while maintaining safety and compliance in hazardous industrial environments.
