INMOCO on Electric Linear Actuators
Electric linear actuators are often selected for linear motion applications because they provide clean and consistent control and performance.

Electric linear actuators are increasingly replacing hydraulic and pneumatic systems in applications demanding precise, repeatable linear motion under harsh conditions. According to Gerard Bush, engineer at INMOCO, modern electric designs combine high force output with sealed construction, delivering improved reliability, lower maintenance, and superior control accuracy.

Precision with high force capability
Electric linear actuators minimize backlash, friction, and mechanical variability compared to rotary motor and linkage systems. Advanced designs can deliver forces up to 294 kN (66,000 lbf), rivaling hydraulic solutions while occupying a more compact footprint. Features such as integrated trunnions help manage shock loads in demanding industrial applications.

Unlike hydraulic systems, which are sensitive to oil viscosity changes and seal wear, or pneumatic systems prone to condensation and freezing, electric actuators maintain performance across extreme temperatures. Special motor windings, sealed bearings, and temperature-appropriate lubrication allow operation above 100°C and below 0°C.

Sealed housings enhance durability
A key advantage of electric linear actuators is their fully sealed housing. This protects internal components from dust, moisture, and corrosion while maintaining precise positioning. Many designs achieve ingress protection ratings up to IP69K, enabling use in high-pressure, high-temperature washdown environments.

In contrast, hydraulic and pneumatic systems require additional protective measures around exposed rods and seals, which remain vulnerable to wear and contamination.

Proven performance in demanding sectors
In a steel foundry, hydraulic actuators were replaced with rod-style electric actuators capable of generating 66 kN (15,000 lbf), eliminating oil leaks and reducing maintenance downtime.

In rail applications, customized servo-driven actuators have met stringent fire, smoke, and vibration standards, improving wheel steering performance in high-speed train carriages.

For corrosive battery manufacturing environments, stainless steel actuator designs with PTFE seals provide enhanced resistance to aggressive chemicals.

Hygienic and contamination-free operation
In food production, electric actuators eliminate the contamination risks associated with hydraulic fluid leaks. Stainless steel, IP69K-rated designs are well suited to washdown-intensive processes such as cutting and packaging.

With precision control, reduced maintenance requirements, and robust sealed construction, electric linear actuators are becoming the preferred solution for harsh industrial environments, hygienic applications, and heavy-duty operations alike.
